Projects
In 2007, the town of Old Fort welcomed the opportunity to participate in HandMade In America's "Small Towns" program.  This program is based on an agenda of mentoring, technical assistance, self-help learning from other and neighboring communities.  With the assistance of a grant from the N.C. Golden Leaf Foundation and the support of the North Carolina Folklife Institute, Old Fort became the most recent participant in this unique effort to increase economic development in the community and to revitalize the downtown area.

Development is based on assets of the community such as our heritage, resources and strengths.  Old Fort has a rich history combining the accomplishments of the early pioneers with a vibrant railroad heritage continuing into the industrial age with textile, leather and furniture manufacturers.

In downtown Old Fort, you will find an eclectic combination of antiques, arts, music, food, museums and other well-established retailers.  Music is an important part of local culture and continues to be enjoyed each Friday night on Main Street at Old Fort Mountain Music.

Today's businesses operate in structures built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  In 1881, the existing railroad depot was constructed.  It serves today as a railroad museum, visitor center and offices for the McDowell Tourism Authority and the Old Fort Chamber of Commerce.  The 14 ft. pink, granite arrowhead standing in front of the depot was erected in 1930 in honor of the Catawba and Cherokee Native American tribes.  Information about available commercial space in the downtown area is coming soon.
